Is that medi spa a danger to your health?

Most of the people I know and clients at my skin care facilities are smart enough to do some research before diving into medical spa treatments…..but it is definitely easy to be hoodwinked by so-called medical professionals proclaiming all sorts of medical proof that what they are going to do to you is no danger to your health….. Yes you may be able to claim on their medical insurance (if they are properly insured) but will your health ever be the same again?

I really recommend that you read the article….it is not just scare tactics – it is common sense and it is an important research base.

Oxygen skin care – a lot of marketing hype and BS…

This kind of article is so annoyingly bad….it hypes the marketing BS from cosmetic companies and plays down the real medical and scientific facts. There are a few lines allocated to medical practitioners who debunk this stupid product notion, but the majority of the article is concentrated on giving air to total marketing BS…

Oxygen is a gas – it cannot be transferred into your skin from some liquid cosmetic formula in a bottle or jar. One the jar or bottle is opened the gas will escape – just a basic law of nature!

Your skin does not breathe – you breathe by way of your lungs and diaphragm. Maybe some of these people making stupid comments in the article can run a test for themselves – stop breathing through the mouth and nose and wait for the skin to take over….sadly it won’t, so death will quickly embrace them

Free oxygen is a danger to the body – that is why oxygen is not able to flow throughout your body – it is tightly contained by haemoglobin in the blood as it leaves the lungs and is transported to the cells where it is used to create energy by the breakdown of glucose molecules. Free oxygen can turn into free radicals. Even with the elaborate oxygen control system in our body enough free radicals are created throughout the body every day to ensure the aging process happens. That is why your body creates antioxidants, plus the antioxidants we consume in fruit and vegetables, in order to slow down the aging process caused by free radicals. Free radical damage will win in the end – and that is what is commonly know as death…. We have a love-hate relationship with oxygen. Oxygen fairy stories do not equate to reality. The reason why we have topical antioxidants like C + Renew Serum and Triple C + E Complex is because we are trying to slow down the aging process of the skin caused by oxygen free radicals….

Hydrogen peroxide is known as an anti bacterial – but it also increases oxygen free radicals. It is seldom used in medical practice any more because of that.

Stupid comments by people who have a title behind their name:
The funniest parts of the article are stupid comments made by senior representatives in these cosmetic companies… like… “As we age, the oxygen in our body is depleted, which results in lifeless skin,” said Michael Ann Guthrie, vice president for retail for Natura Bissé” Oh please!!!! Oxygen is depleted only if you don’t breathe – in which case your skin is not the only organ that will become lifeless… And another stupid comment…Susan Grey, regional vice president of spa operations for New York Bliss Spas states “Oxygen increases circulation, which increases the delivery of nutrition to the skin, and gives your skin energy,” … And, she said that as oxygen travels through the body, the skin is the last to receive it. “By time it gets there,” she added, “it’s a little tired.” Now how is that for a complete lack of knowledge on physiology and the functioning of the body!!!! That must mean that your fingers and toes will never be able to function properly because every element will be ‘too exhausted’ by the time it gets there. The article is full of stupid non scientific marketing BS….

The most sane quote is from Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, a facial plastic surgeon and the director of advanced facial aesthetics in Chestnut Hill, Mass… “We also get enough oxygen to our skin by having healthy lungs and not smoking.” Thank heavens for a reality check! If you are a couch potato and do not exercise in any way, you will have a serious lack of oxygen in your body and it won’t just be your skin that will suffer – your brain will too….maybe that’s what’s affecting the people in these cosmetic companies and the beauty editors who communicate this BS as news… if this article was in the comedy section I would see it as absolutely great journalism

Olive Oil and beauty secrets

There is always someone proclaiming to know a beauty secret…something that will solve all your problems about aging skin….This article claims it is olive oil…but no scientific evidence is delivered (like where were the subjects in the study (equatorial Africa or northern Finland), what else did the subjects put on their skin or consume by way of food?) – I guess because they don’t think readers are smart enough to understand it? Read the article and see for yourself.

Now I happen to like olive oil and believe it has great qualities that can be used in skin care. Squalane is a moisturizing ingredient that comes from olives. Squalane plus other olive extracts are in all the moisturizers in the Blue Turtle Spa online shop (Light + Calm Lotion, Rich + Calm Cream, Rosacea Defense, Wrinkle Reducing Formula for face and neck, and Advanced Bruise Prevention Formula). It is also one of the carrier oils in the amazing 17.5% esterized Vitamin C anti aging product C + Renew Serum. It is an ingredient that seems to work with almost everyone’s skin….and is great for sensitive skin.

I also like olive oil in shampoos, and only use olive oil when I cook. It has positive qualities where ever you look…but is it a beauty secret? I hardly think so….but them some ‘beauty editors’ may even claim one day that healthy eating is a beauty secret I wish they would just say that junk food/fast food/processed food is a beauty disaster waiting to happen….but they seem to be keeping that a secret for now….

Winter moisturizer and moisturizing process

For many people Winter means heating in the home and at work. Dry, warm air indoors combined with dry, cold air outdoors, will inevitably result in tight, dehydrated, and at times flakey skin. The best way to approach Winter skin dryness is the same way you approach Winter clothing – LAYERS!

Firstly, use a hydration serum that will bind water in the skin, so helping your skin retain water and remain more hydrated. The onslaught of dry heat will dry your skin out the way that you can dry your washing indoors in Winter…. Great hydration gels are Hydrate + Serum, Hale Dermist M3 HA, or aloCell Gel.

Secondly, apply a moisturizer that is suitable to your skin type. For dry skin, make your moisturizer a richer one, with shea butter and rich lipids like the Rich + Calm Cream or Skin Renu Wrinkle Reducing Formula for Face and Neck. For combination or oily skin types use a light moisturizer that does not feel thick and greasy on the skin, like Light + Calm Lotion or Skin Renu Advanced Bruise Prevention Formula (don’t worry about the funky name – the ingredients make it a wonderful light moisturizer for face and body).

Thirdly, LAYER your moisturizer. Use your normal quantity of moisturizer on your face and neck, let it absorb for a minute or so, then ADD a second layer of the normal quantity that you use, and apply especially to the areas that need more moisturizing, skipping over the areas where you tend to be more oily. This way you will get the added moisturizing benefit without feeling like you have a thick layer of goop on your face. When you try and apply double the normal amount in one layer you just end up wiping the excess off on your hands and arms and chest etc…so you probably feel that even though you are applying more, there is no change in the level of dryness of the skin.

Of course, if you use a detergent cleanser or use hot water on your face, you are just drying it out and making the dryness of Winter weather even more exaggerated. Use non detergent cleansers like Extreme + Sensitive Cleanser or Dr Schwab Sensitive Cleanser, and use only cool water when you cleanse.

Spring and Summer will soon be here and you can start reducing the amount of layering you do with skin care products and clothing
