Reverse or reduce damage and hyperpigmentation from laser treatments

A laser burns the skin. That’s what it is designed to do. Acute burning and killing of skin cells will stimulate new cell growth. It can help reduce wrinkles. It can help reduce the depth of acne scars. It can help reduce hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage in your youth. BUT it can also INCREASE hyperpigmentation in the skin. It can also leave you with more sensitive skin….

The natural process of the skin is to produce more melanin (your skin colour cells) to cover any inflamed tissue because inflamed tissue is more easily damaged by the sun than non-inflamed tissue. This is particularly important for people with colour in their skin…whether it be Mediterranean, Latino, Middle Eastern, Asian or Equatorial African….etc.

If you have an inflamed acne pimple, the chances are you will have a dark spot on your skin when the swelling reduces and the pimple goes away. So too with laser treatments on skin with colour.

Even though you may have very light skin, and have the lightest skin tone in your family, the chances of having dark pigmentation after laser treatments is still a very real threat. Check out and see if previous generations on your mother’s and father’s side had naturally dark skin…you may have inherited those genes, and will scar quite deeply after laser treatments.

Unfortunately, laser technicians (who are supposed to be medical professionals) don’t know who will pigment the most – and besides, they want to make money so won’t be too concerned about your particular genetic inheritance….

For some clients I’ve seen, essentially the pigment is deep seated due to the laser treatment that traumatised the skin and created the pigmented response… It will be impossible to remove deep seated pigmentation, but we can lighten it and maintain it in a lighter form. Sun exposure will cause deep seated hyperpigmentation to get a lot darker.

So, here’s what I suggest (assuming your skin may still have some low level sensitivity as a residual of the laser treatment):

We start with a nightly Vitamin C Serum plus Decircling Serum treatment. I  blogged about how to use it as a solution for the hands – that’s just an example of where this treatment can be used…it is definitely suited to the face and neck etc… if you feel sensitivity, reduce the frequency of application.

You will use it in the same manner on the face/neck, at night, after cleansing the skin using a gentle cleanser (extreme + sensitive cleanser) and only with cool water. Use 2 – 3 pumps of the C + Renew Serum and apply firstly to pigmented areas and then spread out to all other skin on the face. You will need 3 – 4 pumps of the Decircle + Firm Eyes, and apply it over the C + Renew Serum. Do this about 30 – 40 minutes before going to bed, or anytime in the evening after you cleanse. Leave it on over night.

After a few months you will begin using an alpha hydroxy acid like Age Limit at night before the application of the Vitamin C. I don’t rush this step because it’s best not to re-sensitize or traumatize your skin…the glycolic combined with the vitamin c will be instrumental in lightening the darker pigmented areas even more than the above mentioned step. It will still be slow, so be patient.

For now, if you want to even out skin tone during the day, use the TINTED 20% zinc sunscreen for a subtle evening out of skin tone, or the Zinc and Titanium Tinted sunscreen if you prefer a little more definite coverage.

Always remember to keep your face out of hot or warm water. Use cool water only. Only use sensitive skin products.

By the by, all medical treatments are tested on animals, in case you are opposed to painful and torturous experiments on unwilling caged lab animals…

Did your Summer skin look this bad?

Summer is the time most people think about sunscreen, but it should be all the time….whether you are in the tropics or cooler temperate environments.

A friend of mine was at a beach on an equatorial island in February and he looked like this… even though he said he applied sunscreen…

Sunburn Jesse Feb 23_2015

Painful eh! You think that your skin gets over it….but the damage is set and will appear later on in life when the mechanisms in the skin are unable to continue to mask it. The damage will appear for you, and all the world, to see.

And there is also the fact that you may need to deal with America’s #1 cancer – skin cancer. Maybe even have to deal with the deadliest form, Melanoma, like President Carter does? (and this is a great article in the BBC about the president’s cancer and information about melanoma).

The general rule is to stay out of the sun, and reapply your sunscreen often (even under the umbrella or sitting in the shade). If you swim, even water resistant sunscreen will give you less protection. There is no such thing as water proof sunscreen. Sunscreen can never be a sunblock…sunblock is an illegal and incorrect term because it can never block all the sun’s rays. If you sweat and wipe the sweat off, you need to reapply sunscreen, likewise if you dry yourself after swimming.

The most protection will come from inorganic sunscreens (where the active ingredients are Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium DiOxide). Any other type of active ingredient in the active ingredients list….is organic…and that is bad…because it will break down in the presence of ultra violet light from the sun. Yes, there are mineral sunscreens that don’t make you look white/pasty/chalky/ghostly. And they are not thick and greasy to wear. Check out these sunscreens. SPF is a mathematical formula and should not be relied upon as a deciding factor when choosing a sunscreen. Check out this video about sunscreen facts to make sure you know how to make sunscreen decisions.

People complain about ineffective sunscreens, as they did recently about Alba Organics, but if you comply with the suggestions in the previous 2 paragraphs, you have a much better chance of being sun safe, and reducing your potential for skin cancers.

And it is advisable to apply a multi-level antioxidant before the sunscreen. Antioxidants help defend your skin from the infra red spectrum from the sun, while mineral sunscreens help defend your skin from the ultra violet spectrum from the sun. You need to do both, not 1 or the other…

What heart disease and aging skin have in common

Both are related to inflammation, and both are related to what you eat. Both require you to make changes in your life. Both require you to stop listening to the marketing BS from food and skin care corporations.

According to a recent article by a world renowned heart surgeon, Dr Dwight Lundell says heart disease is mainly due to the processed food we consume every day. Genetically inherited heart disease issues do not affect the majority of people who die from heart disease, food and lifestyle do! Processed and ‘unnatural’ food-like-stuff will also increase inflammatory conditions in your skin, and thus speed up the aging process and visible aging of the skin.  Unfortunately, most people are not going to change their lifestyles in order to reduce potential for heart disease…until it is too late. All that marketing BS from food manufacturers and fast-money-making-junk-food-companies is soooooo seductive…why let reason stand in the way of seduction?

Skin care companies do the same thing. They seduce us into believing that their cream has the secret to eternally youthful skin. They may even be so brazen as to label it natural and organic. It is still BS – no matter what the marketers say. There are NO miracle creams that will delete the effects of bad food and poor lifestyle!  When you realise that marketers are just like politicians (people who will tell you the lies that they know you want to hear), then you will start taking less heed of them, and more heed of basic human logic that has been around for eons.

Seeing as the intelligence of ‘the-top-of-the-food-chain’ has degenerated to a maximum of 140 characters at a time, here is what I and Dr Lundell are saying:

Eat 5 real fruit and 5 real vegetables every day. Stop eating processed food (everything made in a factory and sold in a package). No junk food EVER!

Eating correctly will also help your skin. And always treat your skin sensitively. Understand the Best things and Worst things for your skin. Need a refresher on how to do that?

Yes you may need some medical drugs and treatments from time to time due to genetic issues or life threatening disease beyond your control that can help you age more gracefully. And yes you may need some skin care products that will help strengthen the skin and slow down the visible aging process (always start with an inorganic (mineral) sunscreen and work backwards).

It’s always amazing that so many people want to be ‘natural’ with their skin care and yet they consume copious amounts of ‘unnatural’ processed food, and depend on ‘unnatural’ medical drugs to try and cope with how their ‘unnatural’ behaviour is affecting their ‘natural’ skin and body.

If people feel they can ‘stop cancer’ then they can hardly believe in the natural state of things. Cancer is as natural as oxygen and water and bacteria in your digestive system. It’s what we do to ourselves and our environment that worsens the natural balance of all things on this planet and worsens the potential for cancer. Having a foolish belief that we can stop nature in it’s tracks without stopping our foolish beliefs and activities, is just that…foolish. How come the-top-of-the-food-chain is such a foolish animal????

Choosing the right sunscreen

The sun ages your skin. The sun damages the DNA in skin cells. The sun enables skin cancers. If any of that bothers you, then wear a sunscreen every single day (rain or shine). BUT NOT JUST ANY SUNSCREEN!

I go on about sunscreen ad nauseum with my clients and get little support from dermatologists or dumb beauty editors who just say that wearing an SPF 30 is all you need to know. I had dermatologists (and even my surgeon who removed my melanoma) say that any SPF 30 is OK. Well it’s NOT OK!

The most important aspect of a sunscreen is the active ingredient list. It may be only 1 or 2 ingredients – both of which are inorganic minerals – Zinc Oxide and Titanium DiOxide. NOTHING ELSE MAY BE IN THE ACTIVE INGREDIENTS LIST. The vast majority of sunscreens you can buy have active ingredients that are not Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium DiOxide. The fact that it feels nice/sinks in/looks good/whatever is absolutely irrelevant when we are talking about the issues in paragraph 1 above….

At least I have an ally in Dr Kundu at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine…she states ‘she personally uses SPF 30 sunscreen with the active ingredient zinc oxide, a natural ingredient that physically — instead of chemically — blocks both UVA and UVB rays.’ I just wish she had not used the word ‘blocks’ – no sunscreen is a sunblock (FDA ruling) and scientifically only an unattractive thick mineral emulsion cream or a cardboard box can provide sun blocking effects….all other pleasing lotions are called sunscreens because they screen out a large amount of the suns damaging UV rays.

The mineral sunscreens at the Blue Turtle Spa shop provide attractive yet powerful support for the issues in paragraph 1 above…anti aging, anti damage, anti cancer….

Who is seducing you right now?

Seduction is wonderful – except when it messes up your health and your skin – in which case a meaningful long term relationship is highly recommended… Seductive marketing hype (aka lies) makes you believe that…you are going to look 20 years younger, you are going to be slender, you are going to replace flab with toned muscle And all in a very short period of time?

The seduction of new weigh-loss diets and miraculous antiaging creams (some even by money grabbing doctors) costs millions of people a lot of money, and may even cause health problems. I highly recommend the documentary ‘Hungry for change‘. You can watch the complete film, free, online if you register, or you can stream it on Netflix etc. I liked it because they are common sense people who are dedicated to good nutrition and nutrition advice. Some of them blatantly call out the marketing lies in the food industry (I like it when they do that) 🙂

Dr Christiane Northrop is a wonderfully pragmatic medical doctor….and the nutritionist in the film have had some pretty serious issues with their own weight and health. I particularly liked the practical approach suggested to enable changing the way you eat…simply add in healthy fruit and vegetables and they will naturally crowd-out the junk food…and it’s definitely more effective than shock-therapy-type-diets that cause withdrawal discomfort…and reduces your will power to stick with the diet.

The big problem with nutrition information is how the food industry tries to distort the facts by claiming that ‘scientists have proven that their processed food is safe and nutritious’… REALLY. And then the media regurgitates this garbage information as if it is fact! They do it all the time, like Coke paying nutrition ‘experts’ to say coke is a nutritious snack…. Like the GMO industry paying scientists to say genetically modified food is as good for you as natural or organic food… Like the tobacco industry paying experts to say that smoking tobacco (or even ecigarettes) are not bad for you…. Like politicians paying scientists to claim that there is no such thing as Global Warming and Climate Change…. Money can turn any smart scientist or nutritionist into a prostitute! So just be wise, and moderate your acceptance of industry BS and lies….because money making industry marketers are just like politicians – they lie all the time!

Unfortunately the movie also has these nutritionists making statements about what you put on your skin…the over-hyped claim that everything you put on your skin is absorbed into the blood shows that these people should concentrate on nutrition and not skin care. Check out the video ‘How The Skin Works‘ for more information and to understand the way we are made (which is NOT in the image of the marketers).

Essentially, YOU can be the proof that the skin does NOT absorb everything you put on it…

For example: Will you put all your food in a blender and then smear it over your skin rather than eat it – and yet your body will be as fit and healthy? Will you suggest to your doctor that you crush your anti-depressant/anti anxiety/blood pressure/acid reflux pills etc into your moisturizer and smear it all over the face/body? Based on this hypothesis that your skin absorbs everything, then motor mechanics should die at a very young age – with petroleum and synthetic (toxic?) products all over their hands/arms every day? The list of potential toxins is endless – and fatal if they enter the body in large quantities – but the net outcome is that our bodies are designed with a skin that can keep most stuff out! If all the skin care products that claim to take you back 20 years really worked because ‘the skin absorbs everything’, there would only be a few products on the market – but there are hundreds of thousands making those claims….and we are all still looking for the magical 20 year reversal cream…

The best approach to skin care is to keep your skin strong and balanced, treat it sensitively, and it will work wonderfully well and look naturally younger because it is strong and balanced. It is difficult to create products that can be absorbed by the skin – and usually only small amounts of well formulated products are absorbed. Medically this is well known, otherwise they could make every drug into an easy to use cosmetic cream… Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder – so behold your own natural beauty and not the fake beauty created by marketers and the celebrity machine…

So, how do you look at information concerning what you put in your mouth (and what you put on your skin)?
